CFC Teaches Garden Lessons

Summer Intern, Kandice Wilbur, takes kids for a garden tour.

The Town of Greenwich’s summer Arts and Crafts program is back for another year of summer enrichment for local kids. The Arts and Crafts program, which runs from June 26 to August 4th, from 9 – 11 a.m., provides kids in our community a place to stay active and to continue learning during the summer months.

This year, the Arts and Crafts program will be partnering with Comfort Food Community to engage campers in garden focused lessons and crafts at the Greenwich Community Garden. Lessons will cover topics such as plant and insect identification, the basics of composting, and an introduction to the growing cycle – from seeding to transplanting.

The lessons were designed by CFC’s Amelia Gelnett and will cover a different aspect of gardening each week of the program. As Gelnett explains, “The lessons are designed to teach kids about their surrounding environment and to physically connect them to those surroundings. The goal is to increase their knowledge of and appreciation for nature and food.”

Amelia is joined by CFC summer intern, Kandice Wilbur, who is helping to finalize lesson plans and teaches the lessons to K – 2 campers. Kandice also plays a big support role at the Greenwich Food Pantry on Wednesday and helps coordinate volunteers on gleaning trips to local farms on Thursday. She and her family have keep large garden at home, which gives her a strong background in horticulture and plant ID.  She has also taken Plant Science at Greenwich Central School and generally likes to study science. This educational background makes her perfect for the role that she is playing this summer.  The internship is funded through the generous contributions made to the Lukey Kaempfer Children’s Fund.

A big note of thanks goes out to Chai Stark and her team for helping to facilitate the lessons this summer, to the Town of Greenwich for supporting summer enrichment programs, and to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for hosting the activities on their property.
